The Ancestor of Beauty

Juneteenth Edition: Handmade Bead Rope Necklace with African-Inspired Clay Mask Pendant

Throughout Africa, Masks are created to channel, honor and celebrate ancestral connections. Each mask has its own energy depending on the intentions of the person crafting the piece. Prior to the ceremony, the masks are shielded and protected until their awakening. In African culture, you can see masks most in different ancestral ceremonies and rituals. Those who wear masks during these ceremonies are given the privilege to connect with and channel the energy of the Ancestral spirits being celebrated at the time.

Most masks in African tradition are made of wood or clay. These mask pendants are made of air-dry clay. Inspired from West African culture, each mask is hand designed, crafted and painted.

This month, I was very intentional with my work. All of my pieces are dedicated  to commemorating the freedom of my Ancestors in this country. Juneteenth is the annual commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States. The Emancipation Proclamation was issued on January 1st 1863 officially declaring the freedom of all enslaved Africans in the US. However, It was not until June 19th, 1865 (2) Years after the Emancipation Proclamation was passed) for the news to reach those enslaved in Galveston, Texas.

Juneteenth is the day we remember, honor and celebrate the freedom of those who came before us; those who laid down the foundation we continue to build on. We thank you, we love you and we celebrate you!

Happy Juneteenth!!!

This piece is 14 in long (from back of neck to pendant) 28 in in total. It has a knot and loop closure.
